Swimming Out
Take a chance and swim
out further than before
so far you find yourself
from any form of safe shore
you could drown out here
no one around to hear
your arms are weary
every limb exhausted
your breathing heavy
your heart thumping
it seems this could be the end
have you the energy
to turn and safely return
swim back against the distance
which you have already covered
and such an easy metaphor
for lovers life and loving
when you head out
so much energy use
and if someone does abuse
the ache and fatigue so quick
and vulnerable you drown
fear going out again
for fear of deeper fresher pain.
